  • Bourbon45 ml
  • Lager, cold275 ml

Method

  1. Fill a small shot glass with bourbon.
  2. Pour the cold lager into a pint glass, leaving room for the shot glass.
  3. Lower the shot glass carefully into the beer from the edge — do not stir, so the foam does not overflow.
  4. Drink immediately, preferably in one go, while the beer is still lightly fizzing around the whiskey.

About this drink

The Boilermaker comes from working-class bars, where a shot of whiskey and a beer made a hard-earned finish to a long shift. Its name refers to the workers who stoked boilers in factories and on locomotives — people with no time for fancy cocktails. The modern ‘depth charge’ version, where the shot glass sinks into the beer, turned the drink into a party ritual rather than simply two drinks together.
