About this drink
The shandy has roots in British pub culture, where beer and lemonade came together to make a lighter, thirst-quenching drink. With Campari in place of the usual sweetness, the Italian aperitif’s bitterness finds a fresh, sparkling partner, resulting in a ruby-red, easy-drinking cocktail with a continental twist.
Questions and answers
Which beer works best in a Campari Shandy?
A light pilsner that is not too bitter lets the Campari lead without fighting it. Avoid heavily hopped beers — they create a double bitterness that becomes too much.
How strong is a Campari Shandy?
Surprisingly mild — the beer dilutes the Campari significantly, making it a light, refreshing drink you can have several of on a warm afternoon rather than a classic cocktail with a kick.
