About this drink
Grenadine was originally a pomegranate syrup from the Middle East, long before it became a fixture of American cocktails such as the Tequila Sunrise and the Shirley Temple. A homemade syrup avoids the artificial colour and sugary sweetness of cheap bottles and gives a clean, fruity tartness instead. This is a sweet drink with plenty of sunshine and summer on the tongue.
Questions and answers
What kind of drink is a Grenadine Shake?
A sweet, fruity highball built around the vanilla and citrus notes of Licor 43 and the pomegranate sweetness of grenadine, shaken with lemon and topped with soda water for a little air beneath the sweetness.
Can you leave out the pineapple juice in a Grenadine Shake?
The pineapple juice is optional in the recipe. Without it the drink is cleaner and more citrus-led; with it, a little fuller and more tropical.
