About this drink

The Tequila Slammer became a party favourite in the 1980s, known for its theatrical ritual: the glass is covered, slammed on the table and downed while the bubbles are still rising. It also goes by names such as Tequila Boom Boom or Tequila Popper in different countries. It is equal parts taste and show: the sudden rush of carbonation gives a foaming, electric bite.

Questions and answers

How do you drink a Tequila Slammer properly?

Cover the glass with your palm, slam it on the table to release the fizz and drink it all in one mouthful while it is still foaming. It is a quick, festive shot, not a drink to sip.

Can I use Champagne in a Tequila Slammer?

Champagne makes a more elegant version, often called a Tequila Champagne Slammer, with the same fizzing, fast serve.
