Tips & Notes

  • Use only fresh pineapple and lime juices for the brightest, most balanced flavor profile

  • Crushed ice is essential - it ensures rapid chilling, proper dilution, and the signature frosty appearance that makes this drink special

  • The swizzling technique is crucial - spin the stick vigorously between your palms to properly aerate and integrate all flavors

  • Don't skip the nutmeg garnish - it adds crucial aromatic complexity that enhances the herbal notes of the Chartreuse

  • Green Chartreuse has no true substitute - Yellow Chartreuse is milder and will significantly change the drink's character

While Yellow Chartreuse can be used, it will create a milder, sweeter drink as it’s lower in proof and has a different herbal profile. The original recipe specifically calls for Green Chartreuse’s bold, complex flavor.

A bar spoon works as a substitute – insert it into the drink and spin it rapidly between your palms. The key is vigorous agitation to achieve proper chilling and dilution.

This cocktail is best served immediately after preparation. The crushed ice and swizzling technique are integral to the drink’s texture and temperature, making it unsuitable for batching.

Any quality falernum will work, including John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum, Fee Brothers, or homemade versions. Each will bring slightly different spice profiles but maintain the drink’s character.

Cocktail Difficulty Levels

We’ve added a difficulty rating to every cocktail so you’ll know what to expect before you start mixing. It’s not about being “hard” or “easy” in the strict sense—it’s about how much preparation, skill, and hunting for ingredients you’ll need.

  • Beginner – Quick builds or simple shakes with common ingredients you’ll likely already have at home. Perfect for beginners or a casual evening.

  • Intermediate – A bit more technique (stirring, shaking, muddling, layering) and a few extra ingredients. You might need to buy one or two bottles or garnishes you don’t already stock.

  • Advanced – Multiple steps, specialty techniques (infusions, syrups, foams), or rare ingredients. These drinks take more effort and planning, but reward you with something truly impressive.

The rating is based on things like the number of ingredients, how rare they are, and the skills needed to bring the cocktail together.
