Tips & Notes

  • Always stir, never shake a Manhattan-style cocktail to preserve clarity and achieve the proper silky texture that defines spirit-forward drinks.

  • Use only premium Añejo tequila as the oak-aged complexity is essential to match the depth traditionally provided by whiskey in a classic Manhattan.

  • Fresh ice is crucial - old or watery ice will dilute the cocktail too quickly and mute the complex flavors you're trying to showcase.

  • Adjust the vermouth ratio to taste - start with the 2:1 tequila to vermouth ratio and modify based on your preference for drier or sweeter profiles.

Yes, Reposado can be used for a lighter, spicier profile, but Añejo is preferred for its oak-aged complexity that better mimics the depth of whiskey in a traditional Manhattan.

Traditionally served neat in a chilled coupe glass, but it can also be served over a single large ice cube in a rocks glass for those who prefer their cocktails colder and more diluted.

Angostura bitters are classic and work beautifully, but chocolate or mole bitters can add an interesting Mexican-inspired twist that complements the agave character.

Very important – orange peel adds bright citrus aromatics that lift the drink, while a Luxardo cherry provides sweetness and visual appeal. The choice affects both aroma and final flavor balance.

Cocktail Difficulty Levels

We’ve added a difficulty rating to every cocktail so you’ll know what to expect before you start mixing. It’s not about being “hard” or “easy” in the strict sense—it’s about how much preparation, skill, and hunting for ingredients you’ll need.

  • Beginner – Quick builds or simple shakes with common ingredients you’ll likely already have at home. Perfect for beginners or a casual evening.

  • Intermediate – A bit more technique (stirring, shaking, muddling, layering) and a few extra ingredients. You might need to buy one or two bottles or garnishes you don’t already stock.

  • Advanced – Multiple steps, specialty techniques (infusions, syrups, foams), or rare ingredients. These drinks take more effort and planning, but reward you with something truly impressive.

The rating is based on things like the number of ingredients, how rare they are, and the skills needed to bring the cocktail together.
