About this drink
The Jack Rose appeared in American bars around the turn of the twentieth century and became a real favourite in the 1920s and 1930s, turning up in Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. There are several theories about the name, from the gangster 'Bald Jack' Rose to the pink Jacqueminot rose, but the simplest explanation is probably a play on 'applejack' and 'rose', a nod to the colour. It was once more complex, with raspberry syrup and several citrus juices, but over time it has been pared down to the elegant trio of apple brandy, lemon and grenadine we know today.
