Tips & Notes

  • Always stir, never shake - stirring preserves the drink's silky texture and crystal clarity while achieving proper dilution.

  • Use a large ice cube in the serving glass to minimize dilution and maintain the drink's integrity as you sip.

  • Express the lemon peel oils directly over the drink's surface to ensure the citrus aromatics integrate properly with the cocktail.

  • Choose a high-proof rye whiskey (100 proof) for better structure and spice balance against the cognac and liqueurs.

  • Serve immediately after preparation - the Vieux Carré is best enjoyed fresh when all flavors are perfectly integrated.

While cognac is traditional and preferred, you can use other quality grape brandies, but the flavor profile will change. Cognac provides specific smoothness and complexity that defines the authentic Vieux Carré experience.

Yes, Peychaud’s bitters are essential for an authentic Vieux Carré. They provide the distinctive cherry-anise flavor that’s fundamental to New Orleans cocktail tradition. Other bitters will create a different drink entirely.

Adjust the Bénédictine quantity – use 10ml for a drier profile or up to 15ml for more herbal sweetness. You can also slightly reduce the sweet vermouth, but maintain the overall liquid balance.

Store opened sweet vermouth in the refrigerator and use within 1-2 months for best flavor. Bénédictine, being higher in alcohol, can be stored at room temperature and lasts much longer, but refrigeration extends its life.

Cocktail Difficulty Levels

We’ve added a difficulty rating to every cocktail so you’ll know what to expect before you start mixing. It’s not about being “hard” or “easy” in the strict sense—it’s about how much preparation, skill, and hunting for ingredients you’ll need.

  • Beginner – Quick builds or simple shakes with common ingredients you’ll likely already have at home. Perfect for beginners or a casual evening.

  • Intermediate – A bit more technique (stirring, shaking, muddling, layering) and a few extra ingredients. You might need to buy one or two bottles or garnishes you don’t already stock.

  • Advanced – Multiple steps, specialty techniques (infusions, syrups, foams), or rare ingredients. These drinks take more effort and planning, but reward you with something truly impressive.

The rating is based on things like the number of ingredients, how rare they are, and the skills needed to bring the cocktail together.
