Instructions

Step

Chill the double old fashioned glass by placing it in the freezer for at least 10 minutes, or fill with ice water while preparing the drink.

Step

Prepare the rim by pouring fresh orange or lime juice onto a small plate, and half salt/half sugar mix onto another plate. Dip the rim of the glass in juice, then into the salt/sugar mixture. Return glass to freezer.

Step

Add all liquid ingredients to the blender: tequila blanco, orange liqueur, fresh orange juice, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup if using.

Step

Add the vanilla ice cream and ice cubes to the blender.

Step

Blend on high speed until completely smooth and thick, about 30-45 seconds. If too thin, add more ice; if too thick, add a splash of orange juice.

Step

Taste and adjust sweetness with simple syrup or tartness with lime juice as needed. Pulse briefly to incorporate any additions.

Step

Pour into the chilled, rimmed glass and garnish with orange and lime wheels on the rim. Serve immediately while cold and creamy.

Tips & Notes

  • Use premium vanilla ice cream for the best flavor and texture - the quality of the ice cream directly impacts the final drink quality.

  • Always start with less simple syrup than you think you need - the ice cream and orange juice provide natural sweetness, and you can always add more after tasting.

  • For batch preparation, keep finished portions in the freezer between servings to maintain the ideal thick, creamy consistency.

  • Blend in short bursts initially to avoid over-thinning the mixture - you can always blend more, but you can't make it thicker without adding more ice cream.

  • Use 100% agave tequila blanco for the cleanest flavor that won't compete with the delicate vanilla and orange balance.

Yes, you can substitute with 40-50ml of vanilla oat cream or coconut cream plus additional ice, but the texture will be less rich and creamy than the traditional version.

Use a chilled glass, don’t over-blend, and serve immediately. The key is balancing the ice with the ice cream – start with less ice and add more if needed for the right consistency.

A high-quality blanco (silver) tequila made from 100% agave works best as it provides clean agave flavor without oak notes that might conflict with the vanilla and orange elements.

This drink is best served immediately, but you can prepare it up to 30 minutes ahead and keep it in the freezer, stirring before serving. For longer storage, freeze the mixture and re-blend briefly before serving.

Cocktail Difficulty Levels

We’ve added a difficulty rating to every cocktail so you’ll know what to expect before you start mixing. It’s not about being “hard” or “easy” in the strict sense—it’s about how much preparation, skill, and hunting for ingredients you’ll need.

  • Beginner – Quick builds or simple shakes with common ingredients you’ll likely already have at home. Perfect for beginners or a casual evening.

  • Intermediate – A bit more technique (stirring, shaking, muddling, layering) and a few extra ingredients. You might need to buy one or two bottles or garnishes you don’t already stock.

  • Advanced – Multiple steps, specialty techniques (infusions, syrups, foams), or rare ingredients. These drinks take more effort and planning, but reward you with something truly impressive.

The rating is based on things like the number of ingredients, how rare they are, and the skills needed to bring the cocktail together.
