About this drink

The Harvey Wallbanger is usually credited to the Los Angeles bartender Donato "Duke" Antone in the 1950s, but it was a 1970s advertising campaign for the Italian herbal liqueur Galliano that made it a fixture of disco-era bar menus. At heart it is a Screwdriver, but the Galliano floated on top gives it its signature aroma and the golden, layered look that made it iconic.

Questions and answers

What makes a Harvey Wallbanger different from a Screwdriver?

A layer of Galliano on top. The vanilla-sweet, anise-scented herbal liqueur gives the drink its character and a golden, aromatic twist that vodka and orange juice alone do not have.

Why is the Galliano floated on top rather than stirred in?

It gives the golden layer the drink is known for, and a few moments of anise aroma before you stir it together and drink.
