Tips & Notes

  • Always use freshly squeezed orange juice for the brightest flavor and natural sweetness - bottled juice will significantly compromise the taste.

  • Shake harder and longer than usual to create the signature frothy texture - the vigorous shaking aerates the mixture and helps integrate the cream.

  • Chill all ingredients and glassware beforehand for the coldest, most refreshing result and better cream floating effect.

  • Float the cream by pouring it slowly over the back of a bar spoon held just above the drink surface for the best layered presentation.

  • For batch preparation, mix all ingredients except cream in advance and add cream individually to each glass when serving.

The key to achieving proper froth is vigorous shaking with fresh, cold cream. Shake for at least 15-20 seconds with plenty of ice. Also ensure your cream is fresh and hasn’t been sitting out – warm cream won’t create the same frothy texture.

Yes, you can use half-and-half for a lighter version, though the texture won’t be as rich. For vegan alternatives, coconut cream works well and adds a subtle tropical note. Avoid low-fat dairy as it won’t create the proper texture.

Triple sec is traditional and works perfectly, but premium options like Cointreau or Grand Marnier will elevate the drink with more complex orange flavors. Avoid artificial orange liqueurs as they can taste synthetic alongside fresh orange juice.

Orange Whips are best consumed immediately after preparation. The cream will begin to separate and the froth will dissipate within 10-15 minutes. The fresh orange juice also starts to lose its bright flavor quickly, so avoid making these in advance.

Cocktail Difficulty Levels

We’ve added a difficulty rating to every cocktail so you’ll know what to expect before you start mixing. It’s not about being “hard” or “easy” in the strict sense—it’s about how much preparation, skill, and hunting for ingredients you’ll need.

  • Beginner – Quick builds or simple shakes with common ingredients you’ll likely already have at home. Perfect for beginners or a casual evening.

  • Intermediate – A bit more technique (stirring, shaking, muddling, layering) and a few extra ingredients. You might need to buy one or two bottles or garnishes you don’t already stock.

  • Advanced – Multiple steps, specialty techniques (infusions, syrups, foams), or rare ingredients. These drinks take more effort and planning, but reward you with something truly impressive.

The rating is based on things like the number of ingredients, how rare they are, and the skills needed to bring the cocktail together.
