Tips & Notes

  • Use cucumber-forward gins like Hendrick's or Martin Miller's to enhance the drink's fresh character, though quality London Dry gin works excellently too.

  • Double-straining is crucial for achieving the cocktail's signature smooth texture - never skip this step as plant matter ruins the drinking experience.

  • Muddle mint very gently or simply clap leaves between hands before adding - over-muddling releases bitter compounds that will ruin the drink's delicate balance.

  • Adjust simple syrup between 15-22.5ml to taste preferences - the cocktail should be balanced, not sweet, with the lime providing necessary tartness.

Yes, both work well as substitutes. Blanco tequila creates a “Tequila Eastside” with interesting vegetal notes that complement the cucumber, while vodka makes a cleaner version, though you’ll lose the botanical complexity that makes gin ideal for this cocktail.

Bitterness usually comes from over-muddling the mint leaves, which releases bitter compounds. Muddle cucumber firmly but treat mint very gently – just enough to release oils, not to break down the leaves completely.

Double-straining is absolutely essential for the Eastside. The fine mesh strainer removes all mint and cucumber particles that would create an unpleasant texture and continue to release flavors, potentially making the drink bitter over time.

You can prepare simple syrup in advance and store it refrigerated for up to one month. Cucumber ribbons can be cut a few hours ahead and stored in cold water. However, always muddle fresh ingredients and serve immediately for best results.

Cocktail Difficulty Levels

We’ve added a difficulty rating to every cocktail so you’ll know what to expect before you start mixing. It’s not about being “hard” or “easy” in the strict sense—it’s about how much preparation, skill, and hunting for ingredients you’ll need.

  • Beginner – Quick builds or simple shakes with common ingredients you’ll likely already have at home. Perfect for beginners or a casual evening.

  • Intermediate – A bit more technique (stirring, shaking, muddling, layering) and a few extra ingredients. You might need to buy one or two bottles or garnishes you don’t already stock.

  • Advanced – Multiple steps, specialty techniques (infusions, syrups, foams), or rare ingredients. These drinks take more effort and planning, but reward you with something truly impressive.

The rating is based on things like the number of ingredients, how rare they are, and the skills needed to bring the cocktail together.
